Esophageal endoscopic ultrasound or EUS

What is esophageal echo-endoscopy?

Esophageal endoscopic ultrasound or EUS is an exploration of the esophagus combining endoscopy and ultrasound.

What is the purpose of esophageal endoscopic ultrasound?

This examination allows for the visualization of the structures located behind the walls (mainly lymph nodes, tumors, and cysts) and not visible in conventional endoscopies. Under ultrasound guidance, the anomalies discovered can then be safely punctured.

The main indications are the diagnosis of lymph node invasion, the diagnosis of a tumor per se, or the diagnosis of certain benign pathologies.

Duration

The exam takes about 20 minutes.

How to prepare for it?

You must stop drinking, eating, and smoking at least 6 hours before this examination, which is performed on an outpatient basis. If necessary, you will also have to remove your false teeth and glasses.

A premedication is administered intravenously a few minutes before the examination in order to calm anxiety.

What happens after the procedure?

Resting one hour in the hospital immediately after the examination is necessary to allow for monitoring and dissipation of the effects of sedation.

If samples are taken, antibiotics may be prescribed for 5 days.

Risks and inconveniences

Being accompanied is required and making important decisions on the day of the examination should be avoided.

Sometimes, the patient does not remember the examination after the administration of the sedative.

Discomfort in the throat, bloating, and nausea are common.

The return home

Driving a vehicle the same day is not advised.
