Ultrasound or us (ultrasonography)
What is an ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses ultrasounds. These are emitted by a probe and transmitted into the tissues of the human body, which reflect them and thus form an image of the region examined.
What is the purpose of an ultrasound?
Ultrasound allows the study of multiple organs of the abdomen, pelvis, neck, but also blood vessels, ligaments, and heart.
Duration
This is a quick and painless examination.
How to prepare for it?
You will be asked to uncover the body part to be examined.
For an abdominal ultrasound, you will have to fast for three hours before your appointment.
For a pelvic ultrasound, you will be systematically required to come with a full bladder.
To this end, drink 1L of water one hour before the exam and refrain from urinating.
Procedure
You will be lying in a room with dim lighting to facilitate the visualization of images on the device's monitor.
A cool gel will be applied to the skin to allow the transmission of ultrasounds.
The examination provides real-time images that are analyzed on the device's monitor.
What happens after the procedure?
You will be given tissues to wipe off the gel from your skin.
The examination will be analyzed and a report will be written by the radiologist and sent to the physician who ordered your examination.
The return home
There are no special precautions to follow when returning home after an ultrasound.
You can eat and drink normally.
